Sports & Chiropractic

3 time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady of the New England Patriots once said, “as long as I see the chiropractor, I feel like I’m one step ahead of the game.”  The chiropractic profession has a long and successful history with many of the world’s finest athletes, and it’s no coincidence.  They know something that many others still don’t…chiropractic works.  And it works whether you “believe” in it or not.

In fact, a study in 1991 in the Journal of Chiropractic Research and Clinical Investigation revealed that chiropractic care can increase athletic performance by as much as 16.7%!  Another study in 1997 in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research revealed that chiropractic care increases an athlete’s capillary count.  This means increased oxygen and blood flow to the body.

According to Dr. Spencer Baron, the team chiropractor for the Miami Dolphins, all but one of the 32 teams in the National Football League utilize the services of a chiropractor as part of the triage in managing and preventing injuries. A lot of the teams, such as our New Orleans Saints, now employ 2 chiropractors. (Only one team does not publicly admit to using chiropractic care – the Oakland Raiders.)  The average pro football chiropractor renders 30 to 50 treatments per week during the season.  With in-season (game-playing) duration lasting 16 weeks (not including quarterback camp, mini-camp, and pre- and post-season), 34 chiropractors conservatively give 16,320 to 27,200 adjustments to America’s superstars in just 120 days.

“Those are the guys that put me on the field when I didn’t think I had a chance to be on the field.  These are professionals, and God put them in my life for a reason.” –Terrell Owens, NFL Wide Receiver

You see, a chiropractic adjustment helps ensure the body functions as efficiently as possible.  It does this by balancing the body, improving range-of-motion, and ultimately allowing the nervous system to function at a more optimal level.  It can also help speed recovery from injuries ranging from ankle sprains and separated shoulders, to the all-common lower back pain. In our office, we use a combination of chiropractic adjustments, Active Release Techniques, and various other physiotherapies to speed healing.  You can watch what NFL Hall-of-Famer Jerry Rice has to say about how chiropractic helped him here

You don’t have to be a professional athlete to benefit from chiropractic care.  I think we all want to improve the function of our bodies, whether it’s on the athletic field, at work, or in our backyard.  As many professional athletes realize, your body and your health are your resume, so make sure you take care of it.  Like Tom Brady, stay one step ahead of the game.

Stay Well Adjusted,

Dr. Scott
